Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Models of Major Human Diseases

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Models of Major Human Diseases

The occurrence and development of various human diseases are extremely complex. To deeply explore the pathogenesis and therapeutic efficacy cannot be conducted directly on patients. Due to the conservativeness of evolution, we can use model animals to conduct research on various diseases and life phenomena, and then apply these findings to humans to explore the mysteries of human life, thereby controlling human diseases and aging, and extending human lifespan. Using animal models to study human diseases enables the investigation of various conditions that are typically difficult to observe or are not suitable for experimentation in patients. Moreover, it can overcome the interference posed by multiple factors associated with human diseases, such as the slow progression, long incubation periods, and diverse causes of diseases, and can replicate typical animal disease models with a single cause within a short period of time. This is of great significance for studying the occurrence and development patterns of various human diseases and the mechanisms of disease prevention and treatment efficacy.

In 2018, with the approval of the Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Department, the Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Models of Major Human Diseases was established based on Central South University. The laboratory is built upon technologies such as transgenesis, homologous recombination, and gene editing, and develops advanced genetic and epigenetic modification techniques. It aims to establish animal models for major human diseases including brain disorders, tumors, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders. The laboratory conducts research on the pathogenesis at the molecular, cellular, organ, and individual levels, discovers and identifies disease diagnostic and therapeutic markers and targets, and develops new therapeutic drugs and methods. It makes contributions to improving disease diagnosis, treatment, prevention and enhancing human health.

The main research areas of the laboratory include:

1. Development of new gene-modification technologies and their application in the research of animal models;

2. Research on disease pathogenesis mechanisms based on animal models;

3. Development of new technologies and new drugs for disease diagnosis and treatment based on animal models.
